  • How many glasses in a bottle of wine?

Wondering how many glasses are in a bottle of wine? Our sip-size guide covers everything from standard pour sizes to tips for party planning, so you’ll always know how much wine to serve or buy.

The basics: Wine Glasses vs Bottle sizes

The straightforward answer is it depends on what size glasses you use.

  • A standard size wine bottle is 750ml.
  • A small glass of wine is 125ml. If you use this as a pour size, you’ll get 6 glasses of wine from a bottle.
  • A medium glass of wine is 175ml. That means you’ll get just over 4 glasses of wine from a bottle (or 4.29, to be precise!)
  • A large glass of wine is 250ml. In which case, you’ll get 3 glasses of wine from a bottle.125ml, 175ml and 250ml are the usual serving sizes for a glass of wine in a bar or restaurant.

But of course, you can serve as much or as little you like when you pour your own glass at home.

So, how many glasses of wine you get out of a bottle is really up to you!

Does the type of wine make a difference?

A standard bottle is 750ml whether you’re buying red wine, white wine, rosé wine, fizz or port. That said, they do tend to be served in different sized glasses.

  • Red, white and rosé wines are usually offered in 125ml, 175ml or 250ml glasses in bars and restaurants. So, you’ll get between 3-6 glasses from a bottle of wine.
  • Champagne and sparkling wines are normally served in 125ml glasses. That means you’ll get 6 glasses from a bottle of Champagne or sparkling wine.
  • Dessert wines and fortified wines like sherry and port are normally served in smaller glasses because they’re stronger in alcohol. 75ml is considered a standard serve, which would give you 10 glasses from a bottle.

What about different size bottles and boxes?

Wine bottles come in many different sizes beyond the standard 750ml bottle – these are the most popular sizes we sell:

Miniature (187.5ml) – A single serving in a bottle, this will give you one glass of wine.

Half bottle (375ml) – A handy size for couples and great for picnics, this size provides 2-3 glasses of wine.

Standard bottle (750ml) – Depending on the size of glass you pour, you can expect to get 4-6 glasses of wine from a standard bottle.

Magnum (1.5L) – A magnum is equivalent to two standard bottles, so you’ll get between 8-12 glasses of wine from a magnum. A magnum always adds a wow factor to celebrations and is ideal for family gatherings and events.

Jeroboam (3L) – The equivalent of 4 bottles of wine, jeroboams are fabulous for parties and special occasions. Depending on your pour size (bear in mind they’re heavy, so the first couple of glasses might be quite generous), you’ll get between 16 to 24 glasses of wine from a jeroboam. Just to confuse things (because the wine world never likes to keep things simple), a Bordeaux jeroboam is 5 litres and a 3-litre bottle of Bordeaux is known as a double magnum.

Wine box – Our wine boxes come in a variety of sizes, but the most popular is the 3-litre wine box. That’s the equivalent of 4 bottles of wine, so between 16-24 glasses. The beauty of wine boxes is that they last for up to 6 weeks after opening, so you don’t need to enjoy those glasses all at once!

How much wine do you need for a party?

If you’re trying to figure out how many bottles of wine you’ll need for party, take a look at our handy drinks calculator.

We recommend around half a bottle (or 2 to 3 glasses) of wine per person for a party or wedding, plus a glass of sparkling wine or Champagne each for the toast. But you can input your guest numbers and how many glasses of wine per person you’d like to be able to offer, and the drinks calculator will work it all out for you.

And if you’re wondering how much wine to buy for a wedding, make the most of our dedicated Wedding Wine Service. Our team will be able to help you with how much wine to buy, which wines to choose, when to get it delivered and so much more!
