  • Best Wines for Dinner Parties

You’ve decorated the table and laid out some nibbles for early arrivals. Starters are in the oven and preparations for the main course are well underway. Just one thing left to do – choose the perfect wines for your dinner party.

In this guide to the best dinner party wines, we’ll guide you through the best choices – from a glass of fizz to greet your guests, through to a luxury dessert wine to end your meal in style.

How much wine do you need for a dinner party?

The first question to consider is ‘how much wine will you need?’ Typically, you should plan for between a half and a full bottle depending on your guests. You’ll probably know best whether they’re hearty drinkers – and whether you’re likely to be drinking wine while chatting late into the night.

On the other hand, your guests may bring a bottle or two. But it’s best to err on the side of caution - there will always be other occasions to open a special bottle.

Warm-Up Wines to welcome your guests

For greeting your guests, there’s no need to go with anything too fancy. Save that for the main event.

A glass of Pinot Grigio will work a treat. This crisp, fruity and understated white will go well with the nibbles and won’t get in the way of the conversation.

If you’d like to go with something sparkling instead, Prosecco is just the job. This popular Italian sparkling wine will set the mood perfectly.

Wines to pour with your starter

Choosing the best wine to go with your starter course will of course depend on what you’re serving. If you’d like to dig deeper into food and wine matching, you can read our Food and Wine Pairing for Beginners blog.

But as a general rule, your starter is likely to be a lighter dish – seafood such as seared scallops or prawn cocktail, bruschetta, or a green salad perhaps. This is a great chance to showcase a crisp and aromatic white wine.

If you want a guaranteed crowd-pleaser, go for a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. With its vibrant grassy aromas and juicy tropical fruit, it’s instantly recognisable – and as the UK’s most popular white, is sure to go down a treat.

If you’d like to serve something a little more niche, choose an Albariño – a crisp, delicately aromatic white from Galicia in northern Spain. With its thrilling freshness and saline tang of the sea, it’s perfect with shellfish dishes.

best red wines for the main course

Red wines are generally better suited to red meat dishes – especially lamb or beef – but choosing the right one for your dinner party main course will depend on exactly what’s on the menu.

But there are a couple of specific things to consider when choosing a red for a dinner party. Firstly, don’t go for anything too unusual, like a Zinfandel or a heavily oaked Rioja. You want to pick something that everyone can enjoy – so it’s best to play it a little safe.

Secondly (and this might seem obvious) pick something that is known for being especially food friendly. Some wines are made with dining in mind – and taste much better with food than they do served solo. With those factors in mind, I’d recommend one of these two classic reds.

Chianti

The Italians make their wines specifically with dining in mind and this is one of the most food-friendly reds you’ll ever taste. With its juicy cherry fruit, silky texture and fresh acidity it will pair beautifully with your dinner party main course – especially with richly sauced red meats such as beef lasagne.

Bordeaux

The French are another nation of gastronomes, and red Bordeaux (also known as Claret) has been a staple of fine dining in the UK for centuries. Firm, well-structured and elegant, with plum and blackcurrant notes, a decent red Bordeaux will pair beautifully with steak or a hearty roast.

best white wines for the main course

If you’re serving white meat, or fish for the main course at your dinner party you’ll want to serve a white wine alongside it. Once again, the choice will depend on what you’re cooking. But here are a couple of things to consider.

Firstly, as a general rule, you’re going to want to serve a white that’s a little richer and more full flavoured with the main course. Think less aromatic Sauvignon Blanc and more oak-aged Chardonnay. Secondly, just as with the red, pick something that is not too unusual and will suit every palate. Here are a couple of suggestions.

Aussie Chardonnay

These days, Australian Chardonnays are a far cry from the ‘blowsy’ overripe versions of yesteryear. Modern examples – especially from top regions like Margaret River or Adelaide Hills – are intense yet elegant with ripe tropical fruit and gentle (if any) oak. They are perfect with richer fish dishes.

South African Chenin Blanc

An often-overlooked style that goes beautifully with sauced fish or white meat dishes – especially pork. Chenin Blanc comes in many styles but choose a luxurious barrel-fermented Chenin if you really want to impress your guests. It’s honeyed, baked-apple flavours will be the talk of the party.

Dessert wines to finish the meal in style

If you’re going all out to impress your guests, a good dessert wine can create a fabulous finale. Here are a couple you might like to try.

Tokaji

This famous dessert wine of Hungary was once the favourite of Russian Tsars. With its intense honeyed fruit and brilliant acidity, it’s ideal with fruity desserts like creamy apricot tart or poached pears.

Sauternes

This luxurious dessert wine from Bordeaux typically offers honeyed apricot and citrus fruit, with long, nutty complexity. One of the world’s finest dessert wines, it’s divine with apple tarte tatin or crème brûlée.
