Flavour Profile
Brunello is the prized wine of Montalcino in southern Tuscany famous for its long-lived wines made in very small quantities. They are never cheap but the wines most certainly reward investment and patience.
Brunello di Montalcino Porta Gattolii comes from the outstanding 2021 vintage and is made by talented winemaker-consultant Luca Belingardi, working at the Castello Finoto winery. All the grapes come from Castelnuovo dell’Abate, a subregion in the south known for promoting excellent ripeness in the grapes. These are all hand-harvested and the wine matured in large Slavonian oak barrels for between 30-36 months to allow all the flavours to evolve and marry harmoniously.
Critic James Suckling awarded the wine 92 points, describing it as, “A well-made Brunello with dried herbs, berries and bitter oranges. A touch of spice and savoriness, too.” For best results, open the bottle early and decant. A top choice with game like wild boar or venison and other red meats.
