The Story Behind the Bottle

Doisy-Védrines has been in the Castéja family since 1840 and is today run by Pierre Castéja. He maintains exceptionally high standards at the cellar and will declassify a whole vintage if he believes the wines won’t be up to Grand Vin standard.

Batches of grapes are fermented separately in oak barriques, then left to mature. After a year, each vat is tested to see if it's worthy of inclusion in the Grand Vin.

2023 was a very low-yielding vintage in Sauternes, although the rain in September brought perfect conditions for encouraging noble rot – essential for producing the world’s finest dessert wines. Wine expert James Suckling calls it, "A focused and pure Sauternes with sliced-apricot and orange character, as well as apple pie and light caramel". Savour on its own or with a strawberry tart with crème anglaise or blue cheeses. Even better tuck it away in the cellar for a year or ten if you can.
