The Wine
With its rugged slopes, close to the Med, ‘airconditioning’ from sea breezes and plentiful sunshine, Sicily is a winemaker’s paradise off the boot of Italy's mainland. Growers there are very proud of their native grapes, one of which is Grillo. This is the star of Ciccio (pronounced chee-chi-oh) – the nickname for the winemaker Francesco Asaro. He has been with this Sicilian cellar since 2002. Gently handled and softly pressed, the Grillo makes a delicate, refreshing white with notes of pear and melon and a lift of sage and white pepper. Chill down a bottle and serve with antipasti, grilled fish or salads.
