The Story Behind the Bottle

Oregon’s Willamette Valley is one of the world’s top regions for Pinot Noir, thanks to its impressive elevation, volcanic soil, cooler summers and warmer winters. And Hyland Estate Coury Clone Pinot Noir shows exactly why this region is so special.

The very first vine on the Hyland Estate was planted in 1971. Now, more than 50 years later, it has a reputation for creating exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Its vineyards are planted on red volcanic soil, which lends freshness and elegance to the wines, as does their 300-metre elevation and the cooling Pacific breeze which helps slow ripening.

Owner Laurent Montalieu is a vineyard fanatic, always striving to produce “the ultimate expression of terroir”. They grow different clones of both grapes and do separate bottlings, farming biodynamically too.

This wine is a pure expression of the estate’s history. It is a carefully selected blend of the estate’s renowned Coury clone, imported from Alsace in the 1960s and one of the first vines to be planted by Hyland Estate in 1971. It uses a mix of grapes from the original blocks from Hyland Vineyard and some newer plantings on the estate.

Aged for 9 months in fine French oak, it’s an aromatic, intense and ageworthy Pinot, brimming with brambles, cherry, blackberry pie, toasty oak spice and vanilla bean flavours. Enjoy it paired with pan-seared duck breast, wild mushroom risotto or roast turkey.
