Pirramimma Hartfell McLaren Vale Shiraz 2022

Founded by Alexander Campbell Johnston in 1892, Pirramimma is one of McLaren Vale’s oldest family-owned wineries. Today it’s still very much in Johnston hands and boasts “outstanding vineyard resources which it is using to full effect.” (Halliday Wine Companion).
The Pirramimma Hartfell Shiraz takes its name from one of the family’s Scottish ancestors, made Earl of Hartfell by Charles I in 1643. It’s crafted from the estate’s oldest vines and stands as one of the finest examples of classic Aussie Shiraz you’ll taste.
Ray Jordan of Wine Pilot awards it an impressive 96 points, praising its “intense aromas of plum, black cherry, spices, dark chocolate and even a little mocha. The palate intensity delves deep with the ripe, plummy blackberry notes emerging and complemented by some nice oak.”
This is a big, velvet-textured Shiraz that loves rich food. Pour alongside slow-braised beef, barbecued lamb chops or a mushroom pie. If you can, give it a quick decant to let those dark-fruit and mocha notes stretch their limbs.
