Flavour Profile
Restless River Pinot Noir is an exceptional cool climate wine from a top producer in South Africa’s Hemel-en-Aarde Valley.
Beginning as a hobby for self-taught winemaker, Craig Wessels, Restless River is now a world-renowned producer of cool climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay described by Neal Martin as having “real Burgundian allure”. In 2004, Craig and his wife Anne bought a run-down sheep farm in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley that was home to the area’s original Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Farming these vines became a serious passion, leading to Craig starting to make wine in a converted garage on the estate.
The first Restless River wines were released in 2012 and have continued to impress ever since. Now the estate is regarded as one of the very finest Burgundian influenced producers in South Africa, taking advantage of their cool climate to create elegant, refined Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
The 2023 Restless River Pinot Noir is made with hand-harvested grapes from three sustainably managed vineyards, planted between 2017 and 2020, and aged in French oak barrels for 12 months before bottling. It’s elegantly balanced, with aromas of red cherries and spice, followed by juicy cherry, goji berry and summer pudding flavours with smooth, refined tannins. Delicious on its own, it’s a great pairing for roasted duck, grilled salmon and mushroom risottos.
