Step into the world of RedHeads ... eco-warriors of the Barossa
For 20+ years, RedHeads has been pioneering terrific, award-winning wines in various cellars, firstly in McLaren Vale, then in the Barossa.
In 2018, they finally put down real roots – a small winery with its own vineyard, surrounded on all sides by some of the biggest names in Aussie wine.
They built the winery from scratch, so sustainability could be firmly at its core – from its solar-panel roof to its water reuse, a reservoir for collecting rainwater, a policy of minimal waste and local sourcing. To date, they’ve won four major awards for their green credentials and loads more for their terrific wines.
RedHeads has always had a reputation for hunting down the very finest grapes from small-time growers … their mates, some of the families of which have been nurturing vineyards for over a hundred years. That's old for Oz! They hijack these small parcels of exceptional grapes, destined usually to be blended anonymously into Australia's finest reds, and allow them to shine in their own small-batch wines. Fans adore them, growers too, and they’ve won eleven Trophies and over 240 Golds along the way.
However, their ‘real roots’ comprise an 8-hectare vineyard, just in front of the winery which supplies the grapes for the fabulous dark, weighty Shiraz 1888.
TOP-OF-THE-LINE WINES, SUSTAINABLY MADE
RedHeads have won two of Australia’s biggest environmental awards and two Drinks Business Green Awards.
They’re committed to green practices and have been certified organic in Australia since 2022.
97% of electricity used is generated from their very own solar panels.
Nearly 100% of the winery’s water is collected from the roof, then purified for use.
redheads ... the new greenheads
Right from the start the vision for the new RedHeads winery was to make it fully sustainable. Apart from the old 1888 cottage on the site, one of the oldest buildings in the Barossa that they have lovingly restored (and was the inspiration for the name of their flagship Vineyard Partner wine), they had a blank sheet. They could make sustainability, recycling, reusing and waste reduction their guiding principles. They wanted to keep energy consumption low and energy generation high, recycle as much as possible and keep waste to a minimum ... general waste is certainly the smallest bin in the corner!
RedHeads is living proof that you can make truly great wines while still being kind to the planet. Conserving water, generating 97% of their own power (the rest from green sources, of course) ... other cellars, both large and small, look to them as the beacon in sustainability.
