Montepulciano d'Abruzzo   

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is a juicy, fruit-filled red wine made from Montepulciano grown in the Abruzzo region in east-central Italy. The vineyards stretch from Appenines foothills down to the Adriatic coast – two thirds of which are classified as mountainous. The region gained DOC status in 1968 and Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is now one of Italy’s most exported styles, being a staple on the wine lists of Italian restaurants across the world.

Be careful not to confuse Montepulciano the grape, with Montepulciano the town, in Tuscany. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano comes from vineyards in the Tuscan town and is a classic, relatively high-priced red wine made from the Sangiovese grape. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is made from the Montepulciano grape grown in the Abruzzo region.

Most Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is classified as DOC (Denominazione di origine controllata). However, in 2003 the subzones of Colline Terramane and Tullum were granted superior DOCG status (Denominazione di origine controllata e garantita) after their wines were recognised for their higher quality and greater complexity. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo can also attain Riserva status if it has been aged for at least two years (with a minimum of 9 months in oak barrels).
