The Wine
Until recently, Austrian wines were rarely seen outside the country – which is the only reason Blauer Zweigelt, the country’s leading red grape, isn’t better known. Perfectly suited to Austria’s climate, it is similar in style to Pinot Noir, but a little riper, with juicy cherry fruit. This delicious example comes from a small estate in Krems, a town with over 2,000 years of winemaking tradition. The estate’s clay- and limestone-based vineyards overlook one of the most beautiful stretches of the Danube. The grapes are hand harvested and gently handled to preserve their vibrant fruit and soft peppery spice. Delicious with charcuterie, grilled meats or a simple mushroom risotto – or just enjoyed on its own.
